How to Select the Right Wallcovering Material for Hotels, Offices, and Healthcare Facilities

Three building types, three different problems. The same wallcovering rarely suits all of them.

Three sectors, three refresh cycles, three different definitions of "good". A wallcovering that is perfect for a boutique hotel corridor can be the wrong answer in a ward corridor twenty miles away. Here is how the requirements differ, and what to specify because of it.

Hospitality: designed to be replaced

Hotels refresh. Guest rooms and corridors are reworked on a cycle measured in a handful of years, and the wall is expected to look considered on day one and come off without drama at the end.

  • Removal matters as much as installation. A material that strips cleanly protects the next refresh's budget.
  • Corridors and lift lobbies are contact areas; guest rooms usually are not. Specify differently for each.
  • Custom imagery is the norm, which means the substrate is chosen by you and printed by a provider — so name the substrate in the schedule.

Usual fit: smooth nonwoven for murals and feature walls, clay-coated where colour depth is doing the work at close range, peel-and-stick where the graphic is deliberately temporary.

Offices: zoned, and re-zoned

Workplace fit-outs change layout more often than they change finish. Wallcovering in an office is asked to define zones, carry brand and survive furniture being moved through it.

  • Circulation routes and meeting-room walls take the wear; private offices take almost none.
  • Whole floors get re-planned. A material that can be patched or partly replaced is worth more than one that has to be done wholesale.
  • Acoustic and lighting decisions sit alongside the wall, so surface reflectance is part of the choice.

Healthcare: cleaning regimes decide everything

In healthcare wallcovering, the facilities team's cleaning protocol is the real specification. Whatever the design intent, the wall will be cleaned the way the estate cleans walls.

  • Ask what products and methods will be used, and specify a surface that tolerates them.
  • Corridors take trolley and equipment contact continuously — treat them as the hardest-worked surface in the building.
  • Coordination with infection-control and estates teams should happen before the materials schedule is issued, not after.

Healthcare projects also carry requirements around fire performance and emissions that are documented per project. Those are separate, evidenced claims — ask for each one specifically for the finished, printed assembly rather than assuming a substrate claim carries through.

The cross-sector checklist

  • What is the expected life, and who removes it at the end?
  • Is this a contact area or not?
  • How will it be cleaned, and by whom?
  • Is the imagery custom-printed? If so, which press and which ink set?
  • Is PVC-free required by policy, and is it required through the whole construction?

We manufacture 100% PVC-free printable wallcovering — smooth nonwoven, clay-coated and peel-and-stick — and we do not print. Your print provider stays yours; we supply the material and tell you plainly what it is.
