How to Evaluate the Durability of Commercial Wallcoverings Before You Buy
Durability is not one number. Here is what to compare before a wallcovering goes on a corridor wall.

Durability is the claim buyers ask about most and evaluate least. A number on a data sheet is not the same as a wall that still looks right in year four. Here is a way to assess it before committing.
First, define durability for this wall
Durability is not one property. Decide which of these actually apply, because they lead to different materials:
- Abrasion and contact — shoulders, trolleys, luggage, cleaning equipment.
- Cleanability — how often, with what, by whom.
- Light stability — a south-facing atrium is a different problem from an internal corridor.
- Moisture and humidity — bathrooms, kitchens, pool surrounds, plant-adjacent walls.
- Dimensional stability — whether seams stay closed through the building's temperature cycles.
- Removal condition — the cost that shows up at the end, and the one nobody scores.
A wall can be excellent at four of these and poor at the two that matter for your project.
Second, ask what the claim covers
Digitally printed wallcovering is an assembly: substrate, ink, and often a protective clear coat. Ask specifically whether a durability claim describes the blank media or the finished, printed wall — and who stands behind it. The honest answer from a media manufacturer is usually "here is what the substrate is; the finished assembly is the print provider's to warrant". Treat any supplier who will not draw that line carefully.
Third, test the way the building will treat it
This is the part that separates a good specification from a hopeful one. With samples in hand:
- Clean a printed sample using the facilities team's own product and method, repeatedly.
- Scuff it deliberately along the edge, the way a trolley would.
- Leave a piece in the actual light conditions of the space for as long as the programme allows.
- Hang a piece and take it off again, and look at the wall underneath.
Fourth, price the whole life, not the roll
Compare installed cost plus expected refresh interval plus removal condition. A cheaper roll that damages plaster on removal is not cheaper. A peel-and-stick graphic with a deliberately short life can be the right economic answer precisely because it comes off cleanly.
Fifth, check the construction
If PVC-free is on your policy, confirm it applies to face, coating and backing — and confirm it with the manufacturer of the media.
We make 100% PVC-free printable wallcovering in smooth nonwoven, clay-coated and peel-and-stick, and we do not print. We would rather you tested a sample hard than took a claim on trust.
To evaluate properly: request samples and put them through the tests above, or book a virtual demo.
